Union youth members learn negotiation process at mock table
Kyoto ― Youth members of Kyoto Jichiroren held a negotiation training session at a conference room in Kyoto City on October 12.
Divided into two groups, the members shared challenges and what they wanted to improve at their workplaces. They narrowed their demands down to one as a bargaining item and made a written request. Ahead of the mock negotiation, they discussed what they needed to achieve, what responses from authorities were expected, and how they would counter them.
At the mock bargaining table, executive members of Kyoto Jichiroren played the part of management. The worker representatives argued against replies from the mock employers just as if it were a real negotiation table. Although there were times when they were unable to respond to the management, all of them proactively took part in the training session, speaking about the reality of their workplaces.
One of the youth negotiators said, “The experience was valuable as we were able to learn the process of identifying demands, setting goals, and negotiating at the table.”
